THE GUITAR pick was sunny yellow and bore the legend âNicky.â Joyful swirls surrounded his name.
The plastic edges dug sharply into Nickâs palm as he watched Marsh sing to him on YouTube. He hadnât slept, but the injunction against googling had been so strong, he hadnât thought to succumb until early afternoon. Heâd felt a sharp stab of guilt as heâd typed out âMarshall Burns Chicago gig.â
Nick had loved and lost once. Now he was almost glad heâd been forced to live through it, because he at least knew he wasnât going to let it happen again.
His first problem was access. He had no doubt he was already blocked on Marshâs and Amyâs phones. If he showed up at the studio, he wouldnât blame Josh and Kate for going at him with an actual shovel. At the apartment, best case Marsh could ignore him completely; worst case he would call the police.
Then there was the issue of what to say. What could he say? Iâm sorry. I love you. I was always in it for you, only you. All true statements, but how much power did they really hold? How many times could he say them before they lost all meaning? Why should Marsh believe him?
While Marsh was wrong to think Nick had been using him, that didnât mean Nick had done nothing wrong. So it was important he apologize for the right things. He had to display persistence; he wasnât going to give up on Marsh, no matter what. And he needed to communicate a strong sense of the relationship they had forged. He had to show Marsh that heâd been invested in them, in him, despite believing they were only temporary.
But how could he communicate these concepts concretely? His mind flashed to the notes Marsh had sent while heâd been working himself ragged. Notes and presentsâthings he knew Nick would like because heâd cared enough to pay attention.
He grabbed his keys.
